What does it mean to contextualize? When we are contextualize something, it means we need to think about the context, or situation, we could encounter it. In school, that means thinking about how what we learn in school connects to our wider world in a real way.
Often we can look at the issues or ideas we learn in school from multiple perspective or contexts. Open-minded thinkers often draw on a balance of these views to help them make informed decisions. To help us learn how to use these different approaches to looking at an idea or issue, IB identifies six different Global Contexts. You can think of each Global Context as a lens through which to view what you are learning in a unit. Each Global Context will make different parts of an issue or idea stand out to you. For each unit in your classes, the teacher will use one of the contexts to help you understand the connections you can make. Look below for what each Global Context is and what types of questions you can ask yourself about them.
